Co-option Newspaper article (1)A life long environmentalist, incoming Councillor Cadogan Enright joined the Green Party in the mid 1990’s over his concerns regarding climate change, was a founder member of the Green Party both Downpatrick and in South Down. Cadogan was Director of Elections in both the 2005 local elections and also the 2007 assembly elections when he was election agent for successful Green Party MLA Brian Wilson.

On his co-option Cllr Cadogan Enright said: “I wish to thank cllr Corry for his tireless commitment to the Green Party and Down District Council over the years and for having the confidence to nominate me as his successor”.

Cadogan Enright is an FCCA with postgraduate qualifications in building standards and energy management. Cllr Cadogan Enright is one of the founding members of
Downpatrick NGO Sustainable Development Ltd., which promotes environmentally friendly building standards and small-scale renewable energy.

One issue which will top the agenda for Cllr Cadogan Enright when he enters the Council chamber is Co. Down’s poor performance in a recent Energy Saving Trust: “Down District Council has been reported as the worst performing UK Council in terms of carbon emissions. I am seeking guidance from the Energy Saving Trust to find out how we can reverse this in time for the next local elections – all parties will have to justify their actions on this issue before the electorate, and I look forward to working with other councillors on this issue”.

Married to Brenda for 27 years, the Enright’s have five children, the eldest, Peter (24) stood as a Green Party candidate earlier this year, while the youngest is only 18-months-old. They have 3 daughters in full-time education.

Co-option Newspaper Article (2)Green Party MLA Brian Wilson said: “I wish to thank Cllr Bill Corry and his family for their years of service to the Green Party. Cllr Corry has been a fearless defender of the local environment, a true eco warrior. I know Cllr Enright will work as hard for the local community and can attest to his focus and drive as my election agent in this years elections.”

Green Party Leader John Gormley said “Cadogan is a fantastic organiser and can be relied upon to do a good job for the people living in Down District Council. He has experience with working with people from all parties and none to achive envirommental gains, and I would like to take the opportunity to thank the Down Greens and Cadogan Enright in particular for the help they gave me in my own recent election prior to being appointed MInister of the Environment and Local Government in the Republic”.

ENRIGHT RESPONDS TO EMMISSIONS REPORT

Green Party Cllr. Cadogan Enright has said that more needs to to be done to reduce our carbon footprint, after Down District was found to be the worst offender in a league of the UK’s biggest energy wasters.

Down District has the ‘biggest carbon footprint’ out of over 400 Council areas in the UK, according to The Green Barometer report published by the Energy Savings Trust. For the first time, people living in local authority areas have been ranked by their household and car emmissions.

Cllr Enright reacted to the report by challenging the First and Deputy First Minister to attend the global climate talks in Bali.

“It is particularly worrying that Down District has the largest carbon footprint in the UK. It is time for a more environmentally sound approach to public transport and housing in order to tackle the problems of emmissions, while the local economy needs to be stimulated to reduce the amount of people communting large distances to work,” said Mr Enright.

“It is obvious that climate change is a real threat to the world, and that we in Down District are seriously adding to this problem, but we should approach this problem with innovation and environmental sensibility,” he added.

SAINT PATRICKS CENTRE LITTER PROBLEM

Green Party Cllr. Cadogan Enright, and his predecessor, Bill Corry, have voiced concerns about the actions of students in Downpatrick who are littering outside the Saint Patrick Centre.

The Green Party members have noted groups of students from the local College of Further and Higher Education meeting outside the public building and dropping litter from their lunches. This is despite the fact that several bins have been provided in the immediate area for disposal of waste. It happens every day at lunch time.”

Cllr Enright said, “This is an ongoing problem which is simply a lack of consideration. The actions of these few individuals destroys the look of the area, particularly outside the Saint Patrick Centre whcih attracts crowds from all over the world. This is not the kind of impression we want to give visitors to Downpatrick.”

Former Cllr Bill Corry has also condemned the actions of these students, saying “These are not bad kids, they are just going along with the group. All we ask is that they use the ample provision of bins. Myself and Cadogan have confronted the students, who were from the College, and made them pick up the litter, but stricter enforcement is needed.”

The Green Party has sent a letter to the College Principal asking him to tackle this problem as it is a poor reflection on the College aswell. The pupils from other shools in the area, who also meet outside the Centre, do not seem to have a littering problem tot he same extent.

Cllr Enright has also asked that Litter Wardens be provided in Downpatrick to make an example of those to make a mess of the town and to deter others from behaving likewise.
