COUNCILLOR URGES FISHERMEN TO KEEP ARDGLASS SHORE TIDY

DOWN Green Party Councillor Cadogan Enright has expressed his concern at the state of the coast around Ardglass, which has become polluted by thousands of rubber gloves and dozens of fish boxes used by fishermen in the harbour.

Cllr Enright said, “Fishing is a vital part of our local economy in Down District and elected representatives need to be doing everything they can to support it.”

“However I was invited to walk the Ardglass coastal area by local residents living along the Lecale coast and I was dismayed to find hundreds of fishermen’s gloves littered along the beach and amongst the rocks. Along the whole coast these could amount to thousands. It is clear that these gloves are being thrown overboard when they have been used showing complete disregard for the environment and our seas.”

“Tourism plays an important role in the local economy as well – so routinely using our seas and shores as a bin will not help us attract visitors.”

Green Party Councillor Enright said “In a one hundred meter stretch of beach I counted over 300 gloves and 28 fishing boxes. I have written to the Harbour Master, the Northern Ireland Fishery Harbour Authority and also to the Anglo North Irish Fish Producers Organisation (ANIFPO) to express my concerns in the hope that this practice of littering the sea will stop.”

“The Anglo North Irish Fish Producers Organisation claims on their website that ANIFPO members are committed to the protection of the environment they work in and so this practice of littering the shore and sea needs to be addressed as part of their commitment.”

As well as rubber gloves and fish boxes Cllr Enright also witnessed thousands of plastic bottles and other items of litter the whole way along the coast.

Cllr Enright continued, “It is the ocean that creates most of the oxygen we breathe, it feeds us, holds vast biodiversity, regulates our climate and cleans the water we drink and so it is vitally important we ensure that our ocean is protected and conserved for future generations.”

“I therefore urge all fishermen to please refrain from dumping their rubber gloves or other materials overboard and to keep our coast and seas clean,” concluded Cllr Enright.

FOREST SERVICE ADMITS HABITAT WAS DESTROYED

Photograph shows the recent operation carried out in Drumkeeragh Forest, which led to the destruction of habitat during frog spawning season.

The Green Party has expressed disappointment at the response it has received from the Forest Service regarding a recent operation it carried out in Drumkeeragh Forest, which led to the destruction of habitat during frog spawning season.

The Forest Service originally claimed that no habitat or frogspawn was destroyed. However in a letter received by the Forest Service to the Green Party they have admitted that frogspawn was in fact destroyed but that they were unaware at the time.

The Forest Service also stated that they plan operations with compliance of the UK Woodland Assurance Scheme, a scheme accredited by the Forest Stewardship Council under sustainable forest management. Under this scheme the environmental requirements are comprehensive and so the Forest Service should take their role in environmental protection and enhancement seriously.

Green Party Cllr Cadogan Enright believes however that the recent destruction of frogspawn during spawning season over the last two years shows hypocrisy on part of the Forest Service.

Cllr Enright said, “If the Forest Service claims to be bound by the UK Woodland Assurance Scheme and Sustainable Forest Management then they really should learn about the different seasons in which our wildlife and biodiversity are at their most vulnerable.”

“I was very disappointed with the response I received from the Forest Service. First of all they would not admit to the destruction of the habitat and no apology was given or assurance that this destruction of habitat would never happen again.”

The Green Party will work to protect our fragile environment and hold those government agencies, bound to protect it, to account of their actions,” concluded Cllr Enright.

DOWN District Green Party Activists were congratulated by Green Party MEP Candidate Steven Agnew on an exceptional local campaign. Steven Agnew received 15,764 votes which is almost treble the votes received in the last European Election in which the Greens received just 4810 votes.

According to local election tallies the Green Party received a very good vote in South Down. In areas within the Down District the Green Party tallied on average 10% of the vote.

The only area to top South Downs performance was North Down where the Green Party secured up to 15% of the vote, where the Green Party MLA Brian Wilson is based.

Green Party Councillor Cadogan Enright said, “This bodes well for local election prospects in the Down District and the South Down area at the next local and MLA elections in 2011. If we can maintain this momentum of increasing our vote with every election our prospects of more Green Party Councillors and a Green Party MLA in South Down are increased greatly.”

The Green Party’s European election candidate Steven Agnew has also issued a heart felt thanks to all those who voted for him or got involved in his campaign over the past few weeks and months.

Mr. Agnew said, “To all the people who came out and voted for the Green Party and to all those I have met over the past few months they have my sincerest thanks and gratitude.”

LOCAL GREENS PLEDGE SUPPORT FOR SAVE OUR CITY CAMPAIGN

Stephen Agnew, Green Party European candidate with the petition and traders and supporters of the Save are City campaign.

On a visit to Newry on Saturday 23rd May Green Party Euro Candidate Steven Agnew delivered the signatures of himself the Greens MLA Brian Wilson and three local Cllrs Ciaran Mussen, Cadogan Enright and Mark Dearey, to local traders.

Steven stated that ‘the work the group are doing to prevent an out of town development is in keeping with current planning guidelines, environmental best practice and is in the interest of the local economy which would be decimated by such a proposal. As such I think the group deserves the full support of all political parties.’

Agnew continued ‘it has been shown in countless studies that big box of out of town developments costs thousands of local jobs in family run businesses, cause dereliction and economic decline in town centres and lead to ever greater levels of traffic congestion. I note that the chamber of commerce has taken a lead on this issue and is spearheading attempts to stop this proposal in it tracks. “

He pointed out that “Their support is indicative of the effect that such a development will have on local commerce. In addition streets such as Hill St and Monaghan street are likely to become an uninhabited derelict zone as local family run businesses in the town centre are driven to extinction by massive conglomerates such as Asda which is linked to the American giant Walmart. Walmart is a particularly potent example as in America a thriving ecology of local independent retailers has been replaced by one monolithic monoculture that has effectively caused the extinction of viable town centres and replaced them with decaying inner cities and out of town retail parks. I wish the group every success in their campaign and would appeal to other parties get behind them’. Agnew said.

Also attending the event was Down District Green Party Cllr Cadogan Enright, who said, “I think it is very important that everyone supports the Save Our City campaign because, although we may not live in Newry, if this development is allowed to go ahead it will set a bad precedent for towns and cities all across Northern Ireland, destroying the livelihoods of our small independent retailers and causing the decline of our town centres. Its time to support our local shops and businesses.”

TACKLING FLYTIPPING IN KILLOUGH

Fly tipping at Killough Estate

Whilst visiting constituents in Killough Green Party Cllr Cadogan Enright became aware of a case of flytipping to the rear of Fishermans Row and in front of the Seaview and Westpoint estates.

It was clear that this rubble, as can be seen in the photograph ,came from a building site. The Green Party notified the Down District Council of this incident and following an investigation prosecutions were made against a developer constructing in Killough.
